Along the south shores of the Western Cape, a man stands blowing a horn… made of kelp. Between short blasts he moves among viewpoints, patrolling the shoreline for submerged bodies. His top hat stands proudly. Around his neck rests a sandwich board, tallying up the beasts he has seen today.
The Worlds only Whale Crier, Zolile Baleni, helps direct tourists on their ‘pilgrimage’ to Hermanus. Previously known as Hermanuspietersfontein (say that in a rush), Hermanus draws hundreds of whale watchers every year.
From June through to November every year, Southern Right whales gather off of Hermanus to mate and calve in Walker Bay, recognized by the World Wildlife Fund as the world’s most spectacular vantage point for whale-watching.
Zolile has a specific code which he uses to notify tourists of the whereabouts of the Southern Rights, which I have added to the end of this article (Just incase you ever wonder what the kelp blasts signify).
Hermanus has become a popular tourist destination, partly due to the Southern Rights’ yearly visits, and the beauty of the area. I have added a picture that was taken outside the Hermanus Beach Club. Looks good!
