Africa’s biggest marine park

Cargo Ship

Located on the shores of sunny Durban, uShaka Marine World has fast positioned itself as a key attraction on Durban’s well known Golden Mile. Straddling over 15 hectares of prime beachfront turf, uShaka Marine World is Africa’s largest marine theme park and the fifth biggest in the world.

This spectacular marine world incorporates fresh and sea water, gorgeously lush vegetation, natural materials and a great re-creation of a 1920’s cargo ship wreck. The park is based around family entertainment – no matter what day and occasion, you will always find something to do at uShaka Marine World. From sliding down some extremely high water slides, to relaxed observation of  a variety of beautiful sea animals, to indulging in fine cuisine at one of the numerous restaurants or soaking up the sun on the beach.

Besides being the biggest marine park in Africa, uShaka is also home to some dangerous creatures: in a 450 square metre beach-themed warehouse filled with exotic reptiles.  You can come face to face with some of the world’s fastest and most venomous snakes, such as the King Cobra and Black Mamba.  Then there’s the Anaconda, the longest and heaviest snake in the world and the Gaboon Adder, with the lengthiest and most poisonous fangs.

Some of the other encounters you may have – If you’re brave enough:

Black Throated Monitors:

This is a large lizard with a typically mild temperament.  These lizards can grow to be over 1.2 meters in length and they belong to the same family as the Komodo Dragon.

Scorpions are closely related to spiders, mites and ticks. There are almost 2,000 different scorpion species; however, only about 40 have strong enough poison to kill a person.  Did you know that scorpions can glow in the dark?  This phenomenon occurs under UV light and is a mystery that is still under debate amongst scientists today.

Spiders, frogs, lizards and snakes…

The dangerous creatures continue with a variety of colourful and poisonous dart frogs, hairy and scary tarantulas, venomous Gila lizards, false water cobras, goliath bull frogs, tree vipers and Taipan snakes.

The Argentinean equivalent of the Nile Leguaan, a Tegu, is also one of the creatures on display and the only one of its kind in the country.

uShaka Beach

The adventures don’t stop there, if you continue walking through uShaka village, you will get to uShakaBeach. Besides soaking up the sun on the beach, where flat blue seas gently lap the golden shore, you can also venture into Calypso Dive Shop where you can find out more about the numerous reefs, wrecks and dive sites off Durban.

If that’s not your cup of tea, then head to Ocean Ventures.  This is where you will have the chance to get up close and personal with dolphins, sea birds, turtles, and a variety of other sea life that our beautiful coastline has to offer.
