Exhibiting an array of 13 sporting events the Jeffreys Bay Winter Festival attracts a field of national and international competitors to participate in a line-up of trials open to the public and along with invite only specialty events. Initiated by the JBay Open of Surfing, an event drawing over 10 000 spectators for the final day, the town of Jeffreys Bay also hosts a Mountain Bike Open with several distances ranging from an easy 20kms for kids and beginners to a technical 85kms route, a Downhill Sokkie Jol with ramps and obstacles for skateboarders, a stage of the National VW Rally Championships, Oakley’s X-Over Championship and a Winter Music Festival featuring the country’s leading acts.
ASP Surfing Competition:
Jeffreys Bay is universally-regarded as one of the best right-hand point breaks on the globe and replaced Bali on the 2014 schedule. Universally celebrated as one of the best waves on the planet, Jeffreys Bay has existed as a favorite tour stop for the world’s best surfers since its inception and it adds a welcome element to the annual ASP World Title race.
While many coastal towns in the region latch their doors and close their windows for a long winter slumber, Local artists crank up the music and throw a massive party during the JBay Festival. Artists vary year to year so keep checking the Winter Festival website to find out who will be turning this holiday town into a party.
Downhill Sokkie Jol
The Downhill Sokkie Jol is a skate course featuring a series of obstacles including cones, ramps and kickers. The event is about racing, the fastest time through the course wins.
The downhill’s prove to be a massive draw card attracting bigger crowds than any other event at the festival with a LED lit demo slide jam at night crowning the J-Bay Winter Fest skating.
As national interest in longboarding and downhill skating grows in South Africa, the Sokkie Jol expects to attract more of South Africa’s top skaters as well as a mass of skate fans and spectators in the years to come.
The Funduro consists of an all-new expanded mountain biking course for the J-Bay Winter Fest with 20km, 40km, 60km and 85km routes spanning several private farms in the area. The various routes support all levels of riders from youngsters and those entering their first mountain bike race to more advanced, technical riders.
