Wherever you lay your hat in South Africa the sun is bound to put on a spectacular show at dusk, but these places come out tops for us.
West is best for the most memorable sunsets and Cape Town will put a sparkling end to your day as the sun sinks into the glimmering ocean from many enviable spots along the shore. Take a trip up Table Mountain for panoramic views of the city lights starting to twinkle against the backdrop of big skies and the blue ocean.
Alternatively, you can slip back to sea level while sipping something cool at On the Rocks, an elegant establishment perched on the water’s edge at Bloubergstrand, with exhilarating views of the Mountain and Robben Island, and a chance of whales and dolphins on the way past.
Both of these scenic spots are easily reached on the MyCiti bus from your Cape Town accommodation.
The Knysna Heads are scenically impressive any time of the day, but when the sun hits the water, they are in a league of their own. Catch a glimpse of the grandeur from Featherbed Nature Reserve or take one of the many cruises on offer and chase the sun all the way to the horizon, quaffing champagne and shucking the freshest oysters along the way.
Landlubbers can drink to the dusk on terra firma while admiring the Cape’s best views of the Heads at East Head Café in Knysna, with the promise of succulent seafood and strawberry cheesecake to follow. Enjoy these amazing sights while staying at any of our Knysna Resorts.
Although Mpumalanga is more famous as the ‘place where the sun rises’, sunset in this neck of the bushveld is nothing to be sneezed at either. Verdant bush, animal silhouettes and peaceful birdsong add to the ambience of the approaching night in Mpumalanga.
See the bushveld in a whole new light with a sunset game drive in the Kruger National Park. These late afternoon tours depart from Numbi, Phabeni and Kruger gates at 2pm, stopping off for a sip at sunset and offer the chance to spot any night creatures that are out an early prowl, before returning at 6pm. These gates are easily accessed from Kruger Park Lodge.
Nothing adds atmosphere like a ‘mountainscape’ at sunset. Travel to the Drakensberg, North, South or Central, for an unforgettable ending to your days in the sun. Just add a picnic blanket, some bubbles and a glass or two to seal the deal on a dusk to remember.
Most of our Drakensberg accommodation offers private patios or onsite restaurants where you can toast the twilight in serene style as night falls all around you. Stay at Champagne Sports Resort for the finest accommodation and sunset views.
Even the city skips a beat in the fading light of day. Head to a rooftop bar in Johannesburg, Durban or the Mother City, for a date with a difference overlooking urban scenes against a blazing twilight.
