Throw in some live music and a lovely outdoor environment set within a well-maintained litchi orchard, and this market is the epitome of a well-spent Saturday morning.

Just a 30-minute drive inland from Durban, the Shongweni Market is for the early birds, and is the quintessential farmers’ market experience. Here you will find locals strolling around with dogs and puppies or sharing a cup of coffee and a plate of eggy goodness at the hay bale seating area. The hands-on vendors at this market are very proud of their wares and will happily talk you through their production processes. Foodies will relish a morning spent gorging on everything from traditional English sausages to decadent baked goods, handcrafted organic cheeses, breads and rustic French staples like terrines and rillettes.

This funky market is found in the centre of Durban at the Station Drive Precinct, Berea – known as Durban’s premier arts and culture district. Shop for farm-fresh ingredients and artisan pastries and breads made by enthusiastic local vendors of all ages. You will also find an excellent selection of top-quality meats and a colourful assortment of fresh cut flowers, while you mingle with some of Durban’s coolest cats.

When: Every Sunday: 8am – 1pm.
