A world class cruise terminal that will form part of the Durban Point Waterfront is being planned for the city, with Transnet National Ports Authority set to present a request for the development by February.
The aim is to establish a cruise terminal in Durban by 2015, which will improve boarding for thousands of cruise tourism passengers who now use makeshift facilities at the port.
The proposed site for the terminal will be just inside the harbour and adjacent to the point waterfront.
The terminal will be operated on a seasonal basis in line with the cruise liner schedules however there are plans projected for the terminal for the off season periods as well. The aim of the terminal is to kick start the development in the area of the port and additionally have a multiplier effect in the tourism sector leading to additional income coming into Durban.
