There are some splendid restaurants in Johannesburg that have been honoured with national awards on lists that are usually dominated by Cape Town Restaurants.  Discover some of the best restaurants – according to the Official Website of the City of Johannesburg.

Assaggi

Assaggi, meaning taste, demonstrates Italian Cuisine in every way. This restaurant is all about freshness and authentic food. You will find it hard to choose what to eat from the perfectly grilled fillet to the oven-baked stuffed artichokes, or the truly sublime asparagus and brie lasagne, one of the eatery’s signature dishes.

While the food demonstrates some fine cuisine the atmosphere is very casual and relaxed, with simple decor that includes crisp white tablecloths and beech – wood chairs. Assaggi is one of 3 Johannesburg establishments to appear in the Dine 100 list of Top 10 Restaurants: Everyday Eating, sponsored by Wine magazine and Diners Club International.

Assaggi is situated on 30 Rudd Road, Illovo, and is open for lunch and dinner, Monday – Saturdays.

Brown’s of Rivonia

Once an old Farmhouse, Brown’s is a Johannesburg landmark situated in Rivonia and boasts one of the finest wine cellars in the country. Brown’s has been voted the Best Business Lunch Venue in Johannesburg for 6 years running and received recognition as one of the fifteen best of the best in the Eat Out People’s Choice Reviews.

If you looking to start your week off on a sweet note then Brown’s is the place to go to. Most Mondays a visiting Cape winemaker presents a selection of wines accompanied by a menu tailor made to suit the wines being served. Not only can guests enjoy food and wine of the highest quality but they also get to enjoy the often amusing story behind the winemaker himself!

Brown’s of Rivonia is situated on 21 Wessels Road and is open for lunch from Sundays – Fridays and Dinner seven days a week.

La Campagnola

Situated in Bryanston, La Campagnola serves superb Italian cuisine in delightful surrounds. It has a well stocked deli with an interesting selection of Italian delicacies, as well as a wine list that offers well known Italian wines alongside a good selection of South African estates. The restaurant is fortunate to have the services of a trained Sommelier to assist with the correct choice of wine to compliment your meal.

The restaurant, which has been around since 1993, garnered an Award of Excellence on the 2005 Diners Club International Wine list of the Year, one of only three Johannesburg restaurants to make that elevated grade.

La Campagnola is located at Hobart and Grosvenor Roads and is open for lunch on Sunday and Monday between 12-12.30pm and dinner Tuesday – Saturday from 7pm.

La Cucina di Ciro

La Cucina di Ciro has a devoted regular clientele and rarely disappoints, which is probably why it was one of three Johannesburg establishments to appear in the Dine 100 list of Top 10 Restaurants: Everyday Eating, sponsored by Wine magazine and Diners Club International.

The menu which is changed monthly, offers a range of exotic starters, signature pastas and main dishes, including fresh line fish, T-bone steak and roast Karoo lamb.

Situated at 43 Seventh Avenue, La Cuncina is open for breakfast and lunch from Tuesdays – Sundays and dinner from Tuesdays – Saturdays.

Moyo

Probably one of the most well known restaurants in Johannesburg, Moyo Melrose Arch, is a late- night eatery that seats 350 people and has been operating since 2002. Inspired by the traditions and values of our ancestors, Moyo is a celebration and commitment to the beauty of Africa and the industry of her people.

The menu incorporates influences, recipes and spices from across the continent and the Moroccan tent décor gives an exceptional ambiance. Popular for its flamed lamb fillet stuffed with spinach, mozzarella and pepperdew as well as grilled Ostrich fillet and springbok shanks makes this restaurant a proud winner of the People’s Choice award on the Eat Out magazine website.

Located at Melrose Square, Moyo is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
