Visiting Interlaken Switzerland

Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Flexi Club for arranging our trip to Interlaken in Switzerland, a country of winter wonderland possible. Also, a special thanks to Laval Dulloo for his professional and efficient handling of our reservations.

We left South Africa on 10 December 2010 and having arrived In Zurich on 11 December, we took a train from there Berne and then another train from Berne to Interlaken, a journey of about two hours.

On arrival at our destination in Interlaken, we proceeded to the Hapimag Resort. We were warmly welcomed and we quickly settled in. Their welcome was pleasant and very professional. The accommodation was excellent. We relaxed and rested for a few hours before going to take in the sights of this tourist town.

Interlaken is situated between the lakes of Thun and Brienz and at the foot of the beautiful and majestic Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains of the Alps. It is the starting point for most of the mountain excursions. It is a very picturesque town with a range of excursions, hiking options, sightseeing attractions, souvenir shops, hotels, backpackers, lodges and many eating outlets.

We went up to the Scilthorn peak taking a train from East Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, and from there by cable car to Murren. Wow the view was breathtaking. Walking in the thick snow was an experience of a lifetime and then after two more almost vertical cable car rides, we reached the Schilthorn peak.

At the top, the panoramic view was magnificent beyond the skyline, as far the eye could see. There was nothing else but thick snow as spectacular as ever. It was here that the James Bond movie, “On her Majesty’s Secret Service”, was filmed. In the building , we also saw a multimedia show about Schilthorn and its environment. Schilthorn is 2971 metres above sea level and everything around is covered in thick snow.

We were thrilled to have a meal at the revolving restaurant on top of the peak whilst enjoying the snow-covered scenes in the distance. We also stood on the deck outside around the restaurant on the peak at temperatures below 16 degrees Celsius. It was exhilarating to take in the fresh, clean, clear air and also take photographs.

Boy! Was it cold yet exciting to see professionals skiing at great speeds down the mountain slopes. The highlight of the mountain trip was when we descended, making our way back to Murren, by walking in heavy snowfall. It was awesome. We also went by bus trips to Bonigen and Thun. The scenery with snow-covered roofs, trees and narrow roads was truly magnificent.

We spent an enjoyable and most memorable week in Interlaken, with unforgettable memories indelibly etched in our minds.

Once again thank you Flexi Club
